Terms of service
Last updated October 28, 2026
Leo is a chess coaching app. These terms are the agreement between you and Leo Chess, who runs Leo. They are written to be read, not skimmed; if anything is unclear, ask us before you rely on it.
Who can use Leo
You must be 13 or older to create an account. If you are under 13, please do not sign up. If we learn that an account belongs to a child under 13, we delete the account and its data.
You are responsible for your account: keep your password private, and tell us if you think someone else has used it.
What Leo is, and is not
Leo explains chess. Engine evaluations, best moves, and lines come from the Stockfish chess engine running in your browser. Leo's explanations are written by an AI language model, and like any coach it can be wrong or unclear. Use your own judgment, and treat the engine, not the explanation, as the source of truth about a position.
Leo talks about chess only. It is not a substitute for a teacher, a parent, or professional advice of any kind.
Free and paid parts
Everything that runs in your browser is free: playing against the engine, analyzing games, puzzles, endgame lessons, and the opening database.
Leo's replies, reading scoresheet photos, and booked lessons cost money, because each one costs us money to produce. New accounts get a small number of free replies to try it. After that you can buy prepaid credit, which is charged per reply at our cost plus the markup shown on your account page, or book a lesson at the price shown when you book. If we offer monthly plans, their price and limits are shown before you subscribe.
Prices can change. We show the current price before you pay, and a change never applies to credit you already bought or a lesson you already booked.
Payments and refunds
Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card number.
Unused credit is refundable on request within 30 days of buying it. A lesson canceled at least 24 hours before it starts is refunded in full; a lesson you miss is not. If something goes wrong on our side (for example, a lesson Leo could not run), tell us and we will make it right.
If we ever shut Leo down, we refund unused credit.
Using Leo fairly
Please do not: share your account; try to get Leo to break its rules or talk about things other than chess; use scripts or bots to call the paid parts of the service; or try to disrupt, overload, or break into the service. We may suspend an account that does these things, and we may refuse a refund where the credit was used in breach of these terms.
Your games and conversations
Your games, conversations, progress, and settings are yours. You give us permission to store and process them to run the service for you (for example, to sync them between your devices and to send a position and your question to the AI model so Leo can answer). You can export your games as PGN from the app at any time.
Ending your account
You can stop using Leo at any time, and you can ask us to delete your account and its data by emailing info@leochess.com. We may close an account that breaks these terms. Either way, the refund rules above apply to unused credit.
The small print
Leo is provided as it is, and we do not promise it will always be available or error free. To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for anything arising from Leo is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights that the law does not let us limit.
If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will post the new version here with its date and, for changes that affect paid features, email account holders before they take effect.
